Your custom GPT is being retired. Here is the exact migration order.

Your custom GPT is being retired on Dec 11, 2026. If you built one you actually use, do not wait until December to deal with it. Here is the exact order that works. 1. Save everything first Before you click

Your custom GPT is being retired on Dec 11, 2026. If you built one you actually use, do not wait until December to deal with it.

Here is the exact order that works.

1. Save everything first

Before you click anything else, save the work:

  • Copy your instructions into a text file.
  • Download every knowledge file.
  • Write down every connected app and custom action.
  • Save your conversation starters.
  • Run 5 prompts you know well and save the answers. Those are your before photos for testing the rebuild.

Only the creator or a workspace admin can migrate, one GPT at a time. And publish any pending edits first, because pending edits do not transfer.

2. Know what OpenAI's button will and will not do

OpenAI's own migrate button moves some things and not others.

It moves instructions (they become a skill), knowledge files (they become reference files), and connected apps.

It does not move custom actions, model choice, sharing settings, existing conversations, or drafts. The migrated plugin also starts private, so going public is a separate step.

That gap is why people get stuck. They press the button, assume they are done, and find out later that half the GPT did not come along.

3. Pick one rebuild path

You have 4 sensible paths:

  • Stay in ChatGPT and rebuild as a plugin, best if your users live in ChatGPT.
  • Rebuild as a Claude skill, best if you want a portable format that works across tools.
  • Turn it into a standalone paid bot, best if your GPT had real usage.
  • Rebuild as a ChatGPT Site, best if sharing it easily mattered most.

Pick one, rebuild, then test it against those 5 saved prompts. If the answers match the originals, you are done.

The done-for-you version

I put the whole thing into a kit so you do not have to piece it together from FAQs: the 20-minute checklist, the what transfers chart, all 4 rebuild guides, and a copy-paste skill template you keep no matter which path you pick.

Freelancers charge $497 to $1,497 to do this migration for you. The kit is $19, and you do it yourself in an afternoon. Same job, a fraction of the price.

Two free skills are on GitHub right now if you want to see the format first: https://github.com/lilnickyai/claude-code-skills-samples

One honest note: plugin resubmission timelines are unknown, and personal-account details come from the notice inside your own ChatGPT account, so check that before you trust any guide, including this one. Save your work now, while you still can.
