What six payment providers keep from a $9 Chrome extension

Since the Chrome Web Store stopped taking payments, every paid extension needs a provider of its own, and the fee pages are hard to compare: some charge a flat cut, some add Stripe on top, some add a surcharge for cards

Since the Chrome Web Store stopped taking payments, every paid extension needs a provider of its own, and the fee pages are hard to compare: some charge a flat cut, some add Stripe on top, some add a surcharge for cards outside the US. So we put the published rates side by side for one ordinary case: a $9 one-time purchase, 50 sales a month, 60% of buyers outside the US.

Provider Fees a month You keep
Dodo Payments $42.05 $407.95 (90.7%)
Lemon Squeezy $47.50 $402.50 (89.4%)
Polar, Starter plan $51.55 $398.45 (88.5%)
Payhip free plan, with Stripe $54.60 $395.40 (87.9%)
ExtensionPay, with Stripe $54.60 $395.40 (87.9%)
Gumroad, direct sales $70.00 $380.00 (84.4%)

The rates behind it, from each pricing page on 28 October 2026:

  • Lemon Squeezy: 5% + 50Β’. It mentions "small additional fees" outside the US without a number, so its row has none and is a little too high.
  • Polar Starter: 5% + 50Β’, +1.5% for cards outside the US. Its paid plans go down to 3.4% + 30Β’.
  • Gumroad: 10% + 50Β’ on direct sales, 30% on sales that come from Gumroad Discover.
  • Dodo Payments: 4% + 40Β’, +1.5% outside the US, +0.5% for subscriptions.
  • Payhip free plan: 5%, plus Stripe or PayPal. Paid plans are $29 a month with a 2% fee, or $99 a month with none.
  • ExtensionPay: 5%, plus Stripe. Sales tax is yours.
  • Stripe: 2.9% + 30Β’, +1.5% for international cards.

Three things the table leaves out:

  • Sales tax. Lemon Squeezy, Polar and Dodo Payments are merchants of record: they collect and pay the tax. With ExtensionPay, and anything else where Stripe pays you directly, filing it is your job.
  • Payouts and currency. Some providers pass on payout or conversion fees (Polar passes on Stripe's; Dodo's page lists a $5 fee for payouts under $1,000 in one place and "Free" in another). The real amount is a little lower for all of them.
  • Price changes the order. The fixed 30 to 50 cents weighs heavily on a $3 sale and barely matters on a $30 one. Try your own numbers in the calculator.

Whichever provider you pick, the extension still has to know who paid. ExtensionPay does that on its servers. With the others you check a license key from the extension. That is what we build: Keyturn Kit is a WXT + React starter that does it with no server of yours, free (MIT) for Lemon Squeezy, and $59 once for Pro, which adds Polar, Dodo Payments, Gumroad and Payhip.
