What changes when you go from 33-inch to 35-inch tires

The same speedometer can give you two different answers to the question “What happens at 60 mph?” With a taller tire, you can ask what the gauge reads at a true 60 mph, or how fast the truck is moving when the gauge reads 60. Those calculations use opposite ratios.

Take 33x12.50R15 and 35x12.50R15. In the size labels, the nominal outside diameters are 33 and 35 inches. Both tires have the same stated width and use a 15-inch wheel. The diameter increases by 2 inches, so the axle center rises by an estimated 1 inch in this model.

Hold one speed fixed

A 35-inch tire travels farther per revolution than a 33-inch tire. Assume the gauge was calibrated for the 33-inch tire and the calibration stays the same. At a true 60 mph, the wheel turns at 33 / 35 of its old rate. At an indicated 60 mph, multiply by the inverse ratio to estimate the true speed.

const oldDiameter = 33
const newDiameter = 35
const referenceMph = 60
const ratio = newDiameter / oldDiameter

console.log((newDiameter - oldDiameter) / 2) // 1 inch
console.log((referenceMph / ratio).toFixed(1)) // 56.6 indicated at a true 60
console.log((referenceMph * ratio).toFixed(1)) // 63.6 true at an indicated 60

If you are building this into a calculator, label each output with the speed you held fixed. A test with equal diameters should return 60 in both directions. A test with the larger diameter as the replacement should put the indicated speed below 60 at a true 60.

For a metric label such as 265/70R17, calculate each sidewall as 265 × 0.70 mm, then add two sidewalls to the wheel diameter converted to millimeters. The speed ratios still work as long as both diameters use the same units. Actual rolling circumference depends on the tire and its operating conditions. The diameter comparison also leaves wheel-well clearance, steering, and suspension travel to be checked separately.

The same pair can be entered as a visual cross-check. 4WD tire size comparison
