Getting Readable Text Out of AI Image Models: What Seedream Learned from 4.0 to 5.5

If you've ever asked an image model for a poster and got back "OPEN SATURDYA" in beautiful lettering, you know text rendering is where most generators still fall apart. ByteDance's Seedream line is interesting because each release made a visible jump on exactly this problem. Here's what I've learned using it for product mockups, and what I'm watching for in Seedream 6.

Why text is hard for diffusion models

Diffusion models learn pixels, not glyphs. A word is just a texture that happens to correlate with the prompt. Short, common words ("SALE", "OPEN") render fine; long or unusual strings drift letter by letter. Two things help:

  1. Bigger, better captioned training data where the text in the image is also in the caption.
  2. A stronger text encoder so the model actually "knows" the exact characters you asked for.

The Seedream releases map nicely onto those two levers.

What changed across versions

Version What improved for text work
4.0 Generation and editing in one model, so you can fix a wrong word with an edit pass instead of re-rolling
5.0 Pro Much better prompt adherence; short headlines usually come out right on the first try
5.5 Multi-reference editing and up to 4K output, so small print on packaging stays legible

Prompting tips that actually work

  • Quote the exact text and say where it goes: a coffee bag with the words "Morning Ritual" in bold serif across the top.
  • Keep each text block short. Two short lines beat one long sentence.
  • Name the typography style (condensed sans, hand-lettered script). It reduces letter drift.
  • Fix, don't re-roll. If one word is wrong, use an edit pass with a mask over that word.
  • Generate at high resolution and downscale. Small text needs pixels.

What to watch for in Seedream 6

Based on the trajectory, the things I'd expect next are consistency across a series of images (same label, same layout, different angles), finer layout control, and a tighter handoff from still image to short video.

I've been keeping notes, version comparisons and release tracking at Seedream 6, where you can also try the current Seedream models online.

What's the worst text-rendering failure you've gotten from an image model? Drop it in the comments.
