GEO starts the search journey. The click usually comes later, somewhere else.

That's the shift I'd make before judging AI search by referral traffic.

Look at the graphic.

A brand gets cited in an AI answer.
Then the journey splits:
• Branded search
• Direct visit
• Social shares
• A referral link, the faintest arrow on the chart

Think about how people actually use these tools.

Someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation.
They read the answer.
They check the brand on YouTube or LinkedIn.
They Google the name, then a follow-up question.
Then life gets in the way and the phone goes down.

Later, they come back and search the brand name directly.

Analytics files that visit under branded organic or direct.
The AI answer that started it gets no credit.

I've been doing SEO since 2015, the same year I co-founded TechLookBD.
I studied Computer Science and Engineering, so I trust data.
I also know a report only counts what it was built to track.

Our MarTech Awards title, "Most Pioneering SEO Strategy Company 2024", works the same way.
It sends zero referral clicks.
What it can do is put our name in someone's head before they search for us.

So when someone asks me whether AI visibility is worth it, here's what I'd check before counting referral clicks:

  1. Branded search impressions in Search Console
  2. Direct traffic trends in GA4
  3. How ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini describe the brand, and which sources they cite
  4. Mentions on the sites that matter in the niche

Search is messy.
GEO is where it starts.

How are you tracking what happens after your brand shows up in an AI answer?
