A conversation view may show the answer without showing the tool actions, authorization decisions or historical source version behind it.
Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance explicitly warns that chat-response logs often omit details needed for forensics.
Microsoft also recommends preserving prompt, context, tool-call and output evidence, with correlation identifiers linking:
- identity
- retrieved context
- model/version
- guardrail decisions
- downstream actions
Those links matter because the records may live in different systems.
The platform offers useful primitives
Entra Agent ID for governed agent identity; Copilot Studio data policies for blocking specified sources or connectors; and Application Insights telemetry for observing agent activity.
Copilot Studio’s environment-level telemetry, currently in preview, exports OpenTelemetry-aligned spans with turn-correlation identifiers.
Its documented scope excludes declarative agents.
Evidence Architecture
Evidence Architecture is the R.A.H.S.I. discipline of preserving decision-time meaning across those boundaries.
Depending on the workload, an investigator may need to connect:
- The initiating request, human and agent identities, timestamps and trace identifiers.
- Retrieved material and its historical source version, alongside the agent’s active configuration.
- Tool calls and results, policy decisions, exceptions and human approvals.
- The response, errors and resulting business action.
Retention alone does not make disconnected records reconstructable. A trace can show observed.
