Notes shouldn't go to die in nested folders.

When working on complex software architectures, researching papers, or synthesizing meeting recordings, thinking is rarely linear. It's an interconnected graphβ€”a spatial topology where an audio memo contradicts a design hypothesis, or a markdown snippet bridges two technical references.

Yet most existing productivity software forces us into rigid tree directories, or locks our private thoughts behind proprietary cloud subscriptions.

To solve this, I built Knovum: a modern, local-first desktop knowledge space that merges high-performance infinite visual canvases with embedded on-device AI.

πŸ—οΈ Architectural Foundations

1. Tauri 2 + Rust vs. Electron

When deciding the desktop foundation, Electron was ruled out immediately:

  • Memory Footprint: Electron apps routinely idle at 300MB–800MB RAM. With Tauri 2 and the OS's native webview, Knovum stays exceptionally light and boots in milliseconds.
  • Security & System Primitives: Tauri 2's fine-grained capability model enforces strict boundaries around filesystem and network access.
  • Rust Backend: Long-running background operationsβ€”such as vector indexing and audio processingβ€”run safely on native Rust threads without freezing the UI.

2. Infinite Canvas & Spatial Cognition (Konva + Vue 3)

Knovum provides an unconstrained 2D visual canvas running at 60fps:

  • Built with Vue 3 (Script Setup) and Konva with viewport culling, allowing hundreds of cards, images, and live connections without frame drops.
  • JSON Canvas Compliant: Full compatibility with the open JSON Canvas specification. No vendor lock-in.
  • Dual-mode visualization: Switch fluidly between unstructured visual boards and structured Mind Maps.

3. Local-First Privacy (SQLite & LanceDB)

Knowledge is an individual's most sensitive digital asset:

  • Zero Cloud Dependence: Everything is stored in local SQLite databases on your machine.
  • On-Device Vector Search: Powered by LanceDB, an embedded columnar vector database for instantaneous semantic search and RAG retrieval.
  • Traceable Citations: AI answers directly link and pan to the exact cards and text spans on your canvas.

4. Local Voice Transcription & MCP Integration

  • Whisper + FFmpeg: Drop audio recordings or meeting logs directly onto the canvas; they are transcribed locally and automatically sliced into time-coded note cards.
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP): Native support for Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, enabling seamless bi-directional integration with developer AI agent workflows.

πŸš€ Open Source & Getting Started

Knovum is 100% open source under permissive licensing. We support both macOS and Windows.
