Hey DEV community! 👋
I recently built PixSathi (pixsathi.in), a suite of 50+ free tools. One of the most used tools is the GST Invoice Generator.
While there are many open-source invoice generators out there (like EpiFive), I noticed a pattern: most of them require a heavy setup (Next.js, Node.js, backend databases) or are overly complex for a freelancer or a small shopkeeper who just wants to print a quick bill.
Here is why I built a completely client-side, zero-backend GST invoice generator using Vanilla JavaScript:
1. 100% Privacy (No Server Uploads)
Unlike other tools where you send invoice data to a server, my tool runs entirely in the browser. The state is managed locally. Freelancers can generate invoices without worrying about their client's data being stored on someone else's server.
2. Auto-Calculation without Complexity
I used simple JavaScript to handle the math: CGST + SGST for intra-state and IGST for inter-state. Users just add their items, and the tool calculates the exact tax breakdown, total, and even converts the amount into words (e.g., "One Hundred Eighteen Rupees Only").
3. The Print-to-PDF Approach
Instead of using heavy PDF generation libraries, I used CSS @media print to format the invoice perfectly for A4 sheets. Users just hit "Ctrl + P" (or "Print") and save it as a PDF. This makes the tool extremely fast and light.
4. Mobile-First Design
Most shopkeepers use their phones. I ensured the layout is responsive, so they can generate a bill right from their mobile browser without downloading an app.
The Result
It's not a replacement for Tally or full accounting software, but for freelancers and small businesses who need a quick, clean, and professional-looking GST bill, it gets the job done in seconds.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on building zero-backend web apps or any tips you have for optimizing client-side performance!
Happy coding! 🚀
