Meta has released guest calling for WhatsApp, enabling non-authenticated users to join calls via web-based links.

Participants use desktop browsers to enter a virtual waiting room, managed by an authenticated host.

The implementation supports 1:1 and group calls up to 32 users, providing guests with access to E2EE, screen sharing, and reactions, while maintaining host-side control over session entry and participant removal.

How the new feature works

To start a call, the host must have a WhatsApp account. Through the app, they create a link that they send to their guests. When the guest opens the link, they will enter a digital waiting room and wait for the host's approval to join.

The feature supports both individual calls and group calls with up to 32 people.

What to watch out for

There are some restrictions for those participating as guests:

  • Computing: Joining the call is only possible via a computer browser. The feature is not currently supported on mobile phones or tablets.
  • Privacy protection: Guests can't see other participants' phone numbers or send messages, and the host has full control and can remove any guest from the call at any time.

Despite not having an account, guests enjoy the same security features as other users, such as call encryption, and have access to tools like screen sharing and the ability to react during the conversation.

In the future, the company is expected to add options for scheduling calls via Google Calendar or Outlook.
