What Is a UUID?

UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit number used to identify information in computer systems. When generated properly, UUIDs are practically unique β€” the probability of generating a duplicate is astronomically low. A standard UUID looks like: 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000.

UUID Versions

  • v1 β€” Time-based: Generated from timestamp + MAC address. Sortable, but reveals the generating machine identity.
  • v4 β€” Random: Generated from random or pseudo-random numbers. Most common for general use. No identifying information.
  • v7 β€” Time-ordered: Combines a Unix timestamp with random bytes. Sortable, ideal for database primary keys.

When to Use UUIDs

UUIDs shine in distributed systems where you need unique IDs without a central coordinator. Database sharding, microservice architectures, and client-side ID generation all benefit from UUIDs. They are also great for public-facing IDs where sequential integers might leak information about your data volume.

UUID vs Auto-Increment

Auto-increment IDs are simple and sequential but require a single database to assign them. UUIDs can be generated anywhere β€” in your application code, in a browser, or on multiple servers simultaneously β€” without coordination. The trade-off is storage: UUIDs are 16 bytes vs 4-8 bytes for integers, and they are not naturally sorted.
