The New York Times and other publishers have filed federal lawsuits against Brave, alleging the privacy-focused browser scraped over 30 billion webpages and distributed copyrighted content to AI firms like Anthropic and Mistral, while also targeting features that bypass paywalls.

The company, known for its eponymous privacy-focused browser founded in 2015, is accused of collecting copyrighted content and distributing it to artificial intelligence companies.

According to the lawsuit, the material is being funneled to companies including Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI and Cohere. On the same day, similar lawsuits were filed in the same court by the Daily News, Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel.

How the New York Times describes the company's actions

In its lawsuit, the New York Times likens Brave to a purveyor and distributor of stolen material, as well as a hub for the distribution of such content. The lawsuit alleges that the company created an index of more than 30 billion web pages using an automated data collection program that publishers had no way to prevent.

The lawsuit also targets a browser feature that bypasses barriers to accessing subscription content, and the company's practice of blocking publishers' ads while simultaneously showing its own.

So far, Brave has not responded to requests for comment on the case, while The New York Times is asking the court to issue an injunction and pay damages.
