Statically catching ONNX external_data path traversal before a model loads

The one field an attacker controls
An .onnx file is a protobuf (ModelProto) with no code of its own. But a tensor whose data_location is EXTERNAL keeps its weights in a separate file, named by an external_data entry with the key location. The ONNX spec says that location must be a relative path inside the model directory.
What goes wrong
A naive loader joins that untrusted value onto the model directory and opens it. Then any of these reads an arbitrary local file at load time:
- an absolute path (
/etc/passwd,C:\Windows\win.ini) - a
..segment (../../../etc/passwd) - a URL scheme (
file://,https://) - a NUL or control byte, which can truncate or slip past a weak path check
- a backslash, which can get past a naive
..check and acts as a separator on Windows
Two public cases, both CWE-22, both fixed by forcing the location to a relative, in-directory path:
- onnx < 1.13.0: CVE-2022-25882 / GHSA-ffxj-547x-5j7c, fixed in 1.13.0.
- tract-onnx: CVE-2026-55832 / GHSA-h668-6x6g-f8r5, fixed in 0.21.17 / 0.22.3 / 0.23.2.
Upgrade first. A static check is for models you did not build, before anything loads them.
The check
I shipped onnx_external_data_scan.py (the onnx-external-data-scan command, released as v0.11.0), free and Apache-2.0. It uses only the Python standard library and never loads or executes the model. It parses the protobuf wire format itself (no onnx dependency), reads only the location strings, walks nested subgraphs, and reports:
| Rule | Flags |
|---|---|
| OED001 |
.. path traversal |
| OED002 | absolute path |
| OED003 | URL scheme |
| OED004 | NUL / control byte |
| OED005 | backslash |
One line in CI:
python onnx_external_data_scan.py ./model-dir --fail-on HIGH
Limits, plainly
- It describes detection, not exploitation. There is no exploit here.
- CVE-2026-55832 also has an
offset/lengthdenial-of-service angle. That depends on real file sizes at load time and is out of this static scan's scope. - A clean scan guarantees nothing. It checks one field for one class of bug; keep your loader patched.
