Simplify Your Wizards: Introducing the useStep Hook in React Hook Lab

Handling multi-step forms or wizard interfaces in React can quickly become a boilerplate nightmare. Managing indices, validation, and navigation logic often litters your components with repetitive state updates. Today, I'm excited to announce that react-hook-lab just got a major upgrade to handle this for you!

What's New

We have officially added the useStep hook. This utility is designed to make state transitions for multi-step workflows clean, predictable, and incredibly easy to implement.

The useStep Hook

With this update, you can now manage your wizard progress with just one line of code:

const [step, { goToNextStep, goToPrevStep, setStep, reset }] = useStep(5); // 5 steps total

Key Features:

  • Bounds Protection: Automatic check to ensure you never step out of your defined range.
  • Built-in Navigation: Easy access to goToNextStep and goToPrevStep helpers.
  • State Reset: Quickly jump back to the initial step with the reset method.
  • Readability: Provides canGoToNextStep and canGoToPrevStep booleans to easily toggle button disabled states.

Why it matters

At react-hook-lab, our mission is to reduce the "hook boilerplate" that slows down development. By abstracting the logic of step management, you can focus on building beautiful UI components instead of debugging increment/decrement logic.

We have also integrated automated publishing scripts into our CI pipeline to ensure that future updates reach you faster and with better documentation.

How to get started

Updating is easy! Just pull the latest version from your terminal:

npm install react-hook-lab@latest

Check out our documentation for a full example of how to implement useStep in your next project. We can't wait to see what you build!

Happy coding!
