RPGMapEditor started as a browser-based map editor for creating RPG maps directly on the web.
Now we're taking the next step: RPGMapEditor is coming to desktop.
The new desktop edition is designed for people who want to own the editor, install it on their computer, and keep working without depending on an internet connection.
A Real Offline Version
The desktop version isn't just a shortcut that opens the website.
Once installed and activated, the editor is designed to work offline.
That means you can:
Create and edit RPG maps without an internet connection
Keep working if RPGMapEditor.com is temporarily unavailable
Run the editor directly from your desktop
Store and manage your projects locally
Avoid keeping another browser tab permanently open
Continue using your purchased version without an active subscription
For software like a map editor, this model simply makes sense.
You shouldn't need a permanent connection to the internet just to move some tiles around a map.
Windows and Linux First
The initial desktop release will target:
Windows
RPGMapEditor will be available as a standalone Windows desktop application.
The first release is focused on getting the actual product into users' hands instead of spending months polishing infrastructure nobody sees.
Linux
Linux is also a first-class target rather than something buried somewhere on the roadmap with the traditional developer translation of "maybe eventually."
The Linux build is planned to be distributed as an AppImage, making it easy to run across many modern Linux distributions without requiring a complicated installation process.
One-Time Purchase
The desktop edition is being built around a straightforward model:
Pay once. Use it offline.
Instead of requiring another recurring subscription, the current plan is to offer the desktop version for a one-time payment of €14.99.
After purchasing, you'll be able to download the desktop application from your RPGMapEditor account and activate it on your computer.
The goal is deliberately boring:
Buy software. Install software. Use software.
Human civilization somehow managed to turn that into an unusual business model.
The existing web version isn't disappearing. The desktop edition is an alternative for users who prefer local software and ownership over another subscription.
What About macOS?
macOS support is planned.
Windows and Linux are being prioritized for the initial desktop launch so we can ship, gather feedback, and stabilize the desktop experience before expanding to another platform.
macOS introduces some additional distribution, signing, notarization, and testing requirements, so we'd rather release it properly than slap together an unsupported build and call it cross-platform.
The intended platform roadmap is therefore:
Windows + Linux → macOS
The core editor is being developed in a way that makes a future macOS version practical rather than requiring an entirely separate application.
Why Build a Desktop Version at All?
Web apps are convenient.
But not everything benefits from being permanently tied to a server.
Creative tools are especially good candidates for local applications.
A desktop RPG map editor gives us several advantages:
Offline reliability
Your ability to work shouldn't depend on your Wi-Fi deciding whether it feels cooperative today.
Better access to local files
Desktop applications can provide a more natural workflow around importing, exporting, saving, and organizing projects.
Independence from the service
If you've purchased the offline version, the goal is for the installed application to remain useful without requiring continuous access to RPGMapEditor's servers.
More room for desktop-specific features
Going desktop also opens the door for features that make more sense locally, including improved project management, filesystem integration, larger local projects, and deeper OS integration.
Same Editor, Different Way to Use It
We're not trying to create two completely different RPGMapEditors.
The web and desktop editions share the same fundamental goal:
Make building RPG maps fast and enjoyable without forcing users through complicated professional game-development software.
The browser remains great when you want instant access.
The desktop application is for users who want something permanent on their machine.
What's Next?
The immediate focus is straightforward:
Finish the Windows and Linux desktop builds
Complete purchase and account integration
Make activation reliable and secure
Test the offline workflow
Ship the first public desktop release
Improve it based on real user feedback
Bring RPGMapEditor to macOS
No gigantic two-year roadmap containing 47 features that may never exist.
Ship the useful thing first.
Try RPGMapEditor
You can already use RPGMapEditor on the web at RPGMapEditor.com
The desktop edition for Windows and Linux is currently in development, with macOS planned afterward.
If you create RPGs, tabletop maps, prototypes, or pixel-art worlds, the desktop version is being built for one simple reason:
Sometimes software should just live on your computer and work.
