Privacy by design for home cameras used in elder care
A home camera can be a useful safety tool for elder care, especially for fall detection or remote check-ins.
It can also become a constant surveillance system if its scope is not designed carefully.
Start with the purpose
Define the exact problem:
- fall detection;
- checking a specific access point;
- responding to an alert;
- remote assistance.
Do not begin with βrecord everythingβ.
Respect the person being cared for
When the older person can make decisions, explain camera locations, recording, access and retention.
Care should not erase autonomy.
Account for professional caregivers
Home-care workers, cleaners and health professionals may appear in the footage. Their privacy and employment rights do not disappear because the camera is inside a private home.
Exclude intimate spaces
Bathrooms and similar areas should remain outside surveillance.
For live-in caregivers, their private room deserves the same caution.
Minimize retention
Live view, event-triggered clips and continuous cloud recording create very different risk levels.
Choose the least intrusive configuration that still meets the safety objective.
Secure the cloud account
Use individual accounts where possible, strong authentication and minimal access. Review the camera vendor's storage and deletion settings.
The goal is not βno camerasβ. It is a camera system with boundaries.
