Most of what an AI agent needs from a local business still sits behind a phone line: whether a table is free on Saturday, what a repair would cost, whether the store has something in stock. PlaceCall is an MCP server and API that lets your agent make that call. It dials a US business, gets through the phone menu and the hold music, talks to the person who answers, and returns the outcome with a transcript and a recording.
Install it in Claude Code
Two commands, no shell or git:
/plugin marketplace add voygr-tech/placecall
/plugin install placecall@placecall
Then run /mcp, pick the placecall server and sign in through the browser. The first sign-in creates a PlaceCall account with free credits, so you have no key to copy. After that, ask Claude to call someone and it uses the skill without being told.
The same MCP server works elsewhere. In claude.ai, add a custom connector named PlaceCall with the URL https://api.voygr.tech/mcp and sign in. There are plugins for Codex and Cursor, and PlaceCall is listed in the OpenAI plugin directory that ChatGPT and Codex share.
What to ask for
Give it a US number, or a list of numbers, and a task in plain English:
- book, cancel or reschedule a table or an appointment
- check opening hours, stock or whether a place is still open
- collect quotes from several businesses at once
- follow up on an order
If you don't have a number, describe the place instead ("a romantic restaurant in Chicago, Saturday 8pm"). PlaceCall finds candidates, explains its picks and writes the call brief.
The voice agent reads only the brief, so put the whole job in it: what to ask, who the call is for, names, dates, party size, a callback number and the outcome you want. When it needs a decision mid-call, it asks you.
Call it from your own code
Without MCP, it's one HTTP request. Get a key at api.voygr.tech/checkout; it arrives by email.
curl -s -X POST https://api.voygr.tech/calls \
-H "X-API-Key: $PLACECALL_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"target_phone": "+1XXXXXXXXXX",
"brief": "Call this restaurant and ask what time the kitchen closes tonight.",
"language": "en"
}'
Every call comes back with a labelled outcome, the full transcript and the recording. A failed call carries its reason: dropped, busy, voicemail or wrong number. Calls that fail or never reach a real conversation cost nothing, and the first 250 calls are free.
Plan for hang-ups. When PlaceCall spoke with 848 San Francisco businesses, saying it was an AI on every call, only 1 in 3 kept talking (the full experiment). A short intro and one clear question got answers.
