If phone numbers are the most expensive information in your digital footprint, location in tweets is the most dangerous. A leaked phone number means people know your number; a leaked address means people know where you live.
Why location tweets are worse than they look
People think "I never posted my home address". But location is not always text. Three sneaky forms:
- Platform location tags: GPS coordinates attached to a tweet, precise to the block and the hour
- Photo EXIF: phone photos carry capture location
- Place names in text: "just walked past X compound" is a breadcrumb
Each looks harmless alone. Combined, they form a movement pattern. The danger of address in tweets is that it stacks: one location tweet plus one work tweet plus one birthday tweet and your life radius is mapped.
How the check identifies them
Three layers: direct hits on GPS and place tags; place-name matching against a location database; and time-location correlation, judging whether a tweet was a visit or a residence. The third layer matters most: a week of tweets from a business trip is different from 20 tweets late at night around the same compound.
Cleanup priority
- High: home-address tweets (compound, building, unit)
- High: workplace plus commute route
- Medium: vacation check-ins ("away from home" signals)
- Low: public venue check-ins
After deleting: turn off the "show location" default in X settings, strip location from photo uploads, and run the check again. Treat it as a monthly habit, not a one-time purge.
