I’ve Been Building a Student Hub, and I’d Love Some Feedback

Hey everyone!

This is my first post on DEV.to, so I thought I'd start by sharing something I've been working on.

I'm currently a Psychology student from the Philippines. Before switching programs, I spent three years studying Computer Engineering. I still enjoy programming, though, so I've been continuing to learn on my own and working on different projects whenever I have the chance.

One of those projects is Unified Student Hub.

It's a web app I've been building to help students keep track of their schoolwork, organize their study materials, and figure out when to study.

It's far from finished, but I wanted to share it here and see what other people think.

Why I started working on it

Being a student means dealing with a lot of different things at once.

Sometimes assignments are posted in group chats. Other times they're on a school platform. Lecture slides end up in random folders, and important PDFs get buried somewhere in your downloads.

Then there's the problem of actually finding time to study, especially when multiple deadlines are coming up.

I know there are already plenty of productivity apps out there, but I wanted to try building something myself that combines the things I personally find useful.

At first, it was mostly about keeping deadlines organized. Then I started adding other features, and the project slowly grew into something bigger.

What I've built so far

Right now, the app lets you add assignments, exams, and other deadlines, then organize them by subject.

There's also a weekly planner. You can set the hours you're available, add your classes or other commitments, and estimate how much time you need to finish your tasks.

The app uses that information to put together a study schedule.

It isn't AI-powered or anything. It's just scheduling logic that I've been working on and improving.

I've also added a few other things along the way:

A place to store PDFs, PowerPoints, documents, and other study materials

A PDF reader with highlighting and drawing tools

A study timer with customizable breaks and cycles

Calendar and syllabus imports

Optional reminders

Some offline features, including access to locally saved materials

I also worked on Canvas and Moodle imports, although those depend on what each school allows.

Not everything is as polished as I'd like, but the main features are there.

Here's a screenshot

The design is still changing. I've been trying to make the interface less cluttered and easier to understand, especially for someone opening the app for the first time.

What I'm using

For anyone curious about the stack:

React and Vite for the frontend

FastAPI for the backend

PostgreSQL for the hosted database

SQLite for local development

I've learned quite a bit while working on this, especially about connecting the frontend and backend, handling user accounts, and getting everything deployed.

I still have a lot to learn.

Since I'm studying Psychology now, most of my programming practice happens during my free time. Building projects has been one of the ways I keep learning.

Sometimes I spend more time figuring out why something isn't working than actually writing the feature, but I guess that's part of it.

The parts I'm still working on

One problem I've run into is that I keep thinking of new things to add.

At some point, I realized the app was starting to become confusing even to me.

There were too many sections, settings, and buttons competing for attention.

So I'm trying to focus less on adding features for now and more on making the existing ones easier to use.

I want someone to be able to open the app, add their schoolwork, set their available hours, and understand their study plan without needing a tutorial for every little thing.

There are also bugs I haven't found yet, and some features still need more testing.

I'm not going to pretend it's ready for everyone to rely on. It's an early version, and I'm still figuring things out.

I'm looking for people to try it

I figured I should probably start getting feedback instead of just deciding everything myself.

If you're a student, I'd love to know whether something like this would actually be useful to you.

And if you're a developer, feel free to look through the code. Suggestions and criticism are welcome.

I'd recommend trying it with sample assignments first since it's still in beta.

I'm especially curious about whether the interface makes sense when you first open it. Is it obvious what to do? Are there features that seem unnecessary? Is anything broken?

Even if you only spend a few minutes exploring it, I'd appreciate hearing what you think.

I'll probably share more updates as I continue working on it.

Anyway, that's what I've been building lately. Thanks for reading!
