A while ago I needed to merge two PDFs. Every "free online PDF tool" I found worked the same way: upload your file to someone's server, wait, download the result. A bank statement, a contract, a medical form - straight to a machine I know nothing about, running code I can't see, under a privacy policy I'll never read.

That bothered me enough to build an alternative: PDF Utils (https://yourpdfutils.com/), a set of PDF tools that run entirely in your browser. The file never leaves your device. Not "encrypted in transit", not "deleted after an hour" - it simply never goes anywhere.

What "runs in your browser" actually means

Merging, splitting, compressing, rotating, extracting pages, converting images, signing - all of it happens in JavaScript on your machine. When you drop a file on the page, it's read locally, processed locally, and saved back to your downloads. Once a tool page is loaded, nothing about your file is sent anywhere.

There's no account system because there's nothing an account would be for. No upload queues, no "your file will be ready shortly". The only real limit is your device's own memory.

The parts that were harder than they look

Performance. Moving processing to the client means the user's phone is now the server farm. Long operations need honest progress reporting or people assume the tab crashed, and heavy work has to yield to the UI thread or the page freezes. I spent more time on "feels instant" than on the PDF logic itself.

45 languages. The interface ships in 45 languages. Short tool labels are the hardest kind of text to translate well: a word like "Sign" can mean a signature or a street sign, RTL languages need real layout testing, and plural rules differ wildly. I'd rather grow the list slowly with review than ship 45 machine-translated interfaces.

Compression honesty. "Compress PDF" tools love to promise 90% reductions. A PDF of scanned pages compresses very differently from one born digital, so no honest tool can promise a fixed number. The tool does what the file allows and shows you the real result.

The business model

It's free, supported by ordinary ads instead of subscriptions, watermarks, or "3 tasks per day" limits. Ads align incentives the right way for a tool like this: the site earns when people use the tools, not when they hand over data or a credit card. There's nothing to cancel because you never signed up for anything.

What's next

More tools, more languages, faster processing. If there's a PDF task you still open a desktop app for, I'd like to hear what it is.
