How XRF Guns Actually Test Metal Purity Without Damaging It

Walk into most reputable bullion or jewelry shops today and you'll see a handheld device that looks something like a barcode scanner get pointed at a coin or ring for a few seconds before a purity reading pops up on a screen. No acid, no scratching, no melting. That's an XRF analyzer, and the physics behind it is worth understanding — including the specific thing it can't tell you, which matters more than the thing it can.

The physics: reading light, not touching metal
X-ray fluorescence works by firing X-rays at a piece of metal, which causes the atoms in its surface layer to emit their own characteristic X-rays back out — each element emits at a distinct, identifiable energy level. Per The Bullion Bank's own explanation of XRF gold testing, a detector reads those emitted energies, identifies which elements are present, and calculates their relative percentages, which get converted into a karat or fineness reading. Nothing is removed, dissolved, or damaged in the process — it's genuinely non-destructive, which is the whole reason it replaced acid testing and touchstones as the everyday standard.

The part that actually matters: how deep it reads
Here's the detail that gets glossed over. XRF isn't reading the entire object — it's reading a thin surface layer, and the actual depth is a specific, known number. Per an analysis of XRF penetration depth, the X-rays typically penetrate gold to a depth of about 10–15 microns, with the exact depth depending on the alloy's density. That's deep enough to matter: common plating and coating techniques typically range from 0.2 to 5 microns, comfortably within XRF's detection range. So for the most common counterfeiting method — a thin gold plate over a base metal — a properly used XRF reading genuinely does see through it, because the X-rays reach past the plating into the metal underneath.

Where it actually stops working
The problem is what happens when the gold layer is thicker than that. A heavily gold-clad bar — gold sheet wrapped or bonded around a tungsten or lead core, thick enough to exceed XRF's 10–15 micron read depth — will return a reading that looks like solid gold, because as far as the X-rays can tell, it is. Tungsten in particular is a favorite for this kind of fraud specifically because its density is close enough to gold's that even a weight check doesn't reliably catch it. XRF isn't lying in this case — it's accurately reporting what it can physically reach, which happens to be gold. The instrument is doing its job; the failure is trusting a surface reading as proof of what's inside.

This is also why XRF struggles with curved, tiny, dirty, or coated surfaces more generally, and why a single reading on jewelry with multiple alloys, solder joints, or a rhodium coating over white gold can be misleading if you don't know to check more than one spot.

What this means practically
None of this makes XRF unreliable — it makes it one part of a verification process rather than the entire process. For everyday retail purity checks on jewelry and most bullion, XRF is fast, accurate, and non-destructive in exactly the way it claims to be. For anything where a gold-clad core is a realistic risk — large bars, unfamiliar sellers, deals that look too good — the appropriate response is pairing XRF with a density or ultrasound check, or in higher-stakes cases, a fire assay that actually samples the interior rather than the surface. Knowing the specific number (10–15 microns) is what tells you which category a given purchase falls into.
