How to Sanitize OFX, QFX & QBO Bank Statements (, & ) Before Pasting into ChatGPT or ERP Tickets

When a commercial bank feed import fails in QuickBooks (QBO), Quicken (QFX), NetSuite, or a custom fintech ingestion pipeline, engineers need to inspect the raw .ofx / .qfx / .qbo payloadβoften pasting a snippet into Claude or ChatGPT, attaching it to a vendor support ticket, or committing it as a unit-test fixture.
However, raw Open Financial Exchange (OFX) files contain regulated financial PII under GLBA and PCI-DSS v4.0:
- Full bank account numbers (
<ACCTID>) and credit card numbers (<CCACCTFROM>) - ABA routing numbers (
<BANKID>) and Intuit user credentials (<INTU.USERID>) - Counterparty names (
<NAME>) and wire transfer details (<MEMO>)
1. The Terminal CLI One-Liner (And Why OFX 1.02 SGML vs 2.2 XML Breaks Regex)
For a line-delimited OFX 1.02 SGML file, you can run sed -E:
sed -E 's#(<(ACCTID|BANKID|CCACCTFROM|ROUTING)>)[[:space:]]*[^<\r\n]+#\1999900001#gi; s#(<(NAME|MEMO)>)[[:space:]]*[^<\r\n]+#\1[REDACTED_COUNTERPARTY]#gi' statement.ofx
Why Standard XML Tools & Greedy Regexes Fail on Bank Files
-
Unclosed OFX 1.02 SGML Leaf Tags: Most bank exports use
OFXHEADER:100(VERSION:102), where leaf elements like<ACCTID>849201948201have no closing tag (</ACCTID>). Standard XML parsers immediately crash. -
Single-Line OFX 2.x XML Statements: When an OFX 2.x XML file is minified onto a single line, a non-tag-aware regex wipes out adjacent
<TRNAMT>and<FITID>tags, breaking ERP import validation.
2. Dual SGML/XML Browser RAM Sanitization
To sanitize .ofx, .qfx, and .qbo statements without uploading sensitive financial data to cloud converters, we built OfxBankShield (092-ofx-qfx-bank) and its Free Browser RAM OFX/QFX Sandbox.
- 100% Client-Side RAM Execution: Zero network egress; aligned with GLBA Safeguards Rule, PCI-DSS v4.0, and GDPR Art. 32.
