Most "ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini" posts try to crown one winner. That is how people end up in the wrong tab. These are general models that show up on several different task rankings, and the best one depends on the deliverable, not the brand.

Here is a short way to choose, adapted from our full guide, ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: which to use for what. It uses only the rankings we have already published. It adds no new score and no invented subscription prices.

Start with one line

Before you open anything, name the deliverable in one line. "A long draft that sounds like a person." "A rewrite." "A file that already lives in Google." "A hard coding problem." The one-liner usually decides it.

Writing

For a long draft that has to sound like a person, Claude is the first pick on our writing list. It holds a brief and is stronger on tone than the other two. It is the weaker choice when the job is searching the web and citing what happened this afternoon. That is research, not prose.

ChatGPT is the generalist for drafts and rewrites. The default voice is even, and a careful draft still wants an edit. As of 7 October 2026 the Chat tab can also answer with GPT-6 Intelligent UI: text plus charts, buttons and small tools. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. An interactive reply can be the right answer to a question, but it is not automatically a finished essay.

Gemini is the convenient writer when the draft already lives next to Gmail and Docs. For ordinary prose the voice is flatter than Claude. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can also reach Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app, a 13 October 2026 frontier model for hard coding, science and agent work. Use it when the "draft" is really a hard problem. Don't move an ordinary memo off Claude just because Argon exists.

One more name worth knowing: Claude Haiku 5.5 is the small, high-volume model in Claude's family. Anthropic describes it as the cheapest, fastest and most capable small model they have released. It is for volume and latency, including subagents, not for the careful draft.

Research

None of the three is the first pick when you need links you can click. On our research list that job goes to Perplexity. ChatGPT can start a long brief and keep working, but check the citations, because it reads more like an essay than a sourced answer. Gemini 4 Argon is a different job again: hard science, math and coding, not a sourced tour of the web.

If you already have the files, NotebookLM stays inside them. Don't ask Claude or ChatGPT to pretend those files are the whole web.

Images

Of the three, only ChatGPT is on our image ranking. It is the pick when the picture has to follow a fussy instruction, include readable text, or match a conversation you are already having. It is less beautiful by default than Midjourney. If the words in the picture must be spelled correctly, the list points to Ideogram instead of a general chat.

Coding

The coding list is about where you review the diff, not which chat window you like. Cursor, Claude Code and OpenAI Codex are the tools for that job on our vibe coding ranking. Gemini 4 Argon can take a hard coding problem through the API, and OpenAI's Ultrafast tier for gpt-6.1-sol shortens the wait between output tokens if you call that model directly. Neither fact turns a chat app into the editor. When the thing you will review is a diff, start from Best AI tool for coding.

The quick version

If the deliverable is... Open
A long draft with a human voice Claude
A rewrite, or an answer with a clickable chart ChatGPT
A draft that lives next to Gmail and Docs Gemini
A hard science or coding problem Gemini 4 Argon
Links you must check A research tool such as Perplexity
A picture with a fussy prompt ChatGPT (or Ideogram if the spelling matters)
A diff to review Cursor, Claude Code or OpenAI Codex

Still not sure?

We built a small picker for exactly this: Which AI tool should I use? You answer three questions, and it gives you a pick and two runners-up from the ranked lists, with the verdict written for that list.

A note on how we work: editorial ranks are opinions. A "Featured" badge on the site is paid placement and does not change the rank number.
