Full disclosure: I work on OnePassApps.

MovieMatcherAI is one of the two hosted apps in the OnePassApps membership - the seven studios run in your browser tab, this one runs on our servers. A post on this blog on 2 November covered how to browse it: search, the four filters, the title pages and the watchlist. This post covers the layer that decides what you see next, and the one piece of the app the recommendation engine explains for itself: the match percentage, the match ring, and the four-button reaction scale underneath them.

The panel that explains the recommendations

Beside the recommendation area there is a single button, How recommendations work. Its panel reads, in full:

Sam uses your ratings and reactions to find titles with similar genres, themes and people. The percentage shows how closely a title matches your taste, not its critic score. Select a match ring for the reason behind each recommendation.

Three separate claims sit in those two sentences, and they are worth taking one at a time. The inputs are your ratings and your reactions. The percentage measures how close a title is to your taste, and it is not a critic score. And each recommendation carries a ring you can select to see the reason behind that recommendation.

The four-button reaction scale

Every card in the catalogue carries its own controls. Measured on the live Browse screen, each of the 20 visible cards has four reaction buttons - Strongly like, Like, Dislike, Strongly dislike - sitting alongside a Watchlist: title control and an Open title control. That is 80 reaction buttons across 20 cards, four per card.

Opening a title detail gives you the same scale with per-title labels, under the heading YOUR REACTION and the line Reactions tune your next picks: Strongly like Masterplan, Like Masterplan, Dislike Masterplan, Strongly dislike Masterplan.

A rating and a reaction are different signals, and the app guide is explicit about it: "Saving a personal rating marks the title Watched and preserves an existing first-watched date. A reaction is a separate signal from the rating." So the scale with four buttons is not a prettier version of the star rating - it is a second, separate input into the recommendation engine.

What a guest actually sees

Signed out, the recommendation area does not show a personalised list. The panel header reads YOUR NEXT WATCH with the line Browse freely now. Sign in to save ratings and shape your feed. and a sign-in button beside it.

The catalogue itself is open to guests - the browse grid showed 20 of 89 titles, with the All films, New releases and Top rated views and the Rating, Genre, Year and Person filters - but the "Your next watch" recommendations need an account.

So: I read what the app says the percentage and the match ring mean, and I measured the reaction scale and the guest browse. I have not seen a signed-in recommendation list with a percentage and a ring drawn on it, so I am not going to describe numbers I did not look at.

The rest of the title page

Opening Masterplan (2026, comedy and crime thriller) shows the synopsis, omdb.org as the metadata source, a Runtime field that reads Unknown for this particular title, the rating block Your rating / Not rated, three actions - Watch trailer, Watchlist, Mark watched - and a fourth control labelled More title actions carrying the line: Not interested hides this title from your recommendations only. Your ratings and tracker are unchanged.

The trailer button's own accessible label is Watch Masterplan trailer on YouTube (opens in a new tab), and the page carries a MORE LIKE THIS strip - for this title it offered Digger (2026, drama) - plus a Sources and credits for Masterplan section. The catalogue footer credits the trailer source: Trailer preview supplied by KinoCheck. Film materials retain their respective owners' rights.

The honest limits

  • Not interested hides a title from your recommendations only. It does not change your ratings, and it does not touch your tracker.
  • The percentage measures taste match, not quality. A high number is not a review.
  • The recommendations need a signed-in account, because the inputs - your ratings and reactions - do. The plan block on the page reads FREE PROMOTIONAL PERIOD, $0 / month, 100,000 credits every 30 days - No end date set - No card required and No automatic paid subscription. Existing paid subscriptions keep their terms.
  • Runtime for Masterplan came back as Unknown, and the guide already warns that catalogue data may be incomplete.

OnePassApps is a small team building these apps, and I work on them. If the recommendation panel says something different from what is written here, tell us at [email protected] and we will fix it or say so plainly.
