Bitdefender researchers have documented GhostMap, an Android vulnerability triggered by processing ZIP files with malformed size fields.
The flaw sends a SIGBUS signal to the processor, forcing the device into a persistent boot loop that survives safe mode.
The issue remains present in the system, and Google has confirmed that a fix will be integrated in a future Android release.
Documentation indicates the exploit occurs upon file receipt rather than application execution, making robust input validation essential.
How the problem is triggered
Unlike other threats that require the user to open a malicious application, GhostMap is activated simply by downloading a specific file. These are compressed (ZIP) files that have incorrect data sizes declared. When the phone tries to process these files, the operating system causes a technical error in the processor, resulting in the device constantly trying to open the problematic file and constantly crashing.
How serious is it and how is it fixed?
The problem is particularly persistent, as this situation continues even if you enable the device's safe mode.
A complete factory reset is the only way to fix the problem, but this will erase all your saved data. The only exception is if you had already enabled USB debugging. In this case, you can connect your phone to a computer and delete the problematic files without losing your data.
Google's stance
Bitdefender has notified Google of its discovery. According to the company, the issue is considered outside the scope of immediate security updates. However, Google has stated that it plans to fix it in a future version of Android.
