From Chatbots to Economic Agents: Autonomous Treasury Management on Base
Chatbots generate tokens; economic agents allocate capital.
The gap between generating text and holding private keys looks small in architectural diagrams, but in production, it is a chasm. Most teams building "AI agents" today have built glorified cron jobs wired to OpenAI function calls. If an agent cannot hold assets, bear downside risk, or execute transactions under non-deterministic market conditions, it is not an agent. It is a parser.
To bridge this, we deployed an autonomous treasury agent directly on Base (Chain ID 8453). The objective: manage a rebalancing treasury without human intervention, bounded by on-chain constraints rather than prompt engineering.
Why Base?
Economic agents are latency-sensitive and cost-intolerant. Running high-frequency balance checks, slippage calculations, and swaps on Ethereum L1 drains the principal via gas overhead. A 50 bps yield strategy fails if the transaction costs $14 in base fees.
On Base, sub-cent L2 transactions change the agentβs execution model. The agent can poll, rebalance, and hedge small position sizes ($50β$500) without eroding returns. The treasury operates under the address 0x92Aff59709b03b9373b8fA887D24953D60fAd919.
The Execution Loop
We strip away agent frameworks (LangChain, AutoGen) entirely for the transaction pipeline. These abstractions introduce failure modesβhallucinated parameters, brittle JSON parsing, uncontrolled latency.
The runtime runs on a lean deterministic loop:
- Perception: Pull real-time liquidity depth and gas metrics via an RPC node on Base.
- Inference: A quantized local model or deterministic strategy engine evaluates portfolio variance against predefined risk parameters (e.g., maintain 70% cbETH / 30% USDC).
-
Execution: The agent constructs, signs, and broadcasts raw EVM transactions using
web3.py.

Deterministic Safety Rails Over LLM Intuition
The common mistake is letting an LLM decide how much to swap. LLMs are non-deterministic; financial execution must be strict.
We enforce safety at two levels:
-
Local Assertions: Before signing, a local sanity checker verifies hard invariant bounds:
- Max spend per block:
<= 0.5 ETH - Max slippage tolerance:
<= 0.3% - Target contracts whitelisted via bytecode hash verification.
- Max spend per block:
On-Chain Boundaries: The treasury contract should use a multisig guard (like Safe with a module) that revokes execution rights if the agent tries to route funds outside approved Uniswap v3/Aerodrome pools.
The Shift
When software transitions from answering questions to spending its own capital, the engineering discipline changes. You stop optimizing for prompt tone and start optimizing for mempool latency, slippage simulations, and private key safety inside secure enclaves.
The treasury at 0x92Aff59709b03b9373b8fA887D24953D60fAd919 is simply code executing deterministic math on an immutable ledger. That is what an economic agent actually is.
