The EWPT (INE Web Application Penetration Tester) is a practical exam. You test a web application environment, find real vulnerabilities and show you can exploit them. Our voucher costs $234.99 and covers one exam attempt.
This page covers what the exam proves, what it costs, how to study and what to avoid.
What the EWPT proves and who it suits
The EWPT shows you can run a basic web penetration test from start to finish. That means mapping an application, finding flaws such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting (XSS), and exploiting them. INE has updated the exam over time, so check which version your voucher covers before you start studying.
It suits:
- Junior penetration testers who want a hands-on credential.
- Developers and security analysts moving into offensive web testing.
- Students who have finished a networking or security fundamentals course.
It is not a good first security exam. If you cannot yet read an HTTP request, start with fundamentals. Our Entry-Level & Fundamentals category lists easier starting points.
If you want the advanced step later, INE also offers the EWPTX (Web Application Penetration Tester eXtreme). Treat it as a follow-up, not a substitute.

Skills to practice before exam day
Web penetration testing typically centers on enumeration and common exploitation such as SQL injection and XSS. Use the table below as a practice checklist, not as official weights.
| Skill area | What to be able to do |
|---|---|
| Information gathering | Map pages, parameters, technologies and hidden paths |
| Enumeration | Find directories, files, virtual hosts and exposed endpoints |
| Injection | Detect and exploit SQL injection, including blind cases |
| Client-side flaws | Find reflected and stored XSS and understand their impact |
| Authentication and sessions | Test logins, cookies, tokens and password reset flows |
| Access control | Spot broken authorization and insecure direct object references |
| File handling | Test uploads and file inclusion |
| Tooling | Use an intercepting proxy such as Burp Suite and keep clean notes |
You do not need exotic tricks. You need to be fast and methodical on the basics.
Cost, voucher delivery and refund rules
The EWPT voucher is $234.99. Compare it with INE's own current price before you buy. Here is how our process works:
- Your code is emailed within 12 hours of payment. It also appears in your account.
- You can cancel an order for a full refund before delivery.
- A delivered code is non-refundable, with one exception. If the test provider rejects it as invalid, already used or expired on first use, contact support within 14 days. Send the order number and a screenshot, and we replace or refund the code.
Full terms are on the refund policy and delivery policy pages.
One voucher means one attempt. Do not buy until your lab practice is steady.
An 8-week study plan at 8 to 10 hours a week
This plan assumes you know basic networking and HTTP. If not, add two weeks at the start.
| Week | Focus | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | HTTP, cookies, Burp Suite setup, a note template | 8 |
| 2 | Enumeration: directories, parameters, technologies | 8 |
| 3 | SQL injection: manual first, then tools | 10 |
| 4 | XSS and client-side issues | 8 |
| 5 | Authentication, sessions, access control | 10 |
| 6 | File upload, inclusion, command injection | 10 |
| 7 | Full practice runs on intentionally vulnerable apps | 10 |
| 8 | Timed run, review weak spots, rest the last day | 8 |
For practice targets, use legal, intentionally vulnerable apps such as DVWA, OWASP Juice Shop or WebGoat. Only test systems you own or have written permission to test.
If you want a similar plan for a reporting-heavy exam, see our ECPPTv2 guide. More options are in the Penetration Testing & Ethical Hacking category.
Worked example: from a suspicious parameter to a note you can reuse
Say a practice app has /products?id=3. You add a single quote and the page throws a database error. That is your lead.
First, confirm it by hand with Burp Repeater. Compare these requests and note how the response changes:
/products?id=3 AND 1=1
/products?id=3 AND 1=2
Then enumerate with a tool on your own practice target:
sqlmap -u "http://target.local/products?id=3" --batch --dbs
Write down four things in your notes: the URL, the parameter, the proof (the two responses) and the impact (which data you could read). Use the same four lines for every finding. This habit saves time when the clock is running.
One caution: check the exam rules on automated tools before you rely on them. Learn the manual method so you are never stuck.
Common mistakes that cost candidates the pass
- Only reading. The exam is practical. Reading slides without lab time leaves you slow.
- Skipping enumeration. Missed endpoints are missed findings. Map everything first.
- Tool dependence. If one scanner fails, you need a manual path.
- Messy notes. You cannot reuse a finding you cannot find again.
- Rabbit holes. Set a time limit per target. Move on and return later.
- Brain dumps and leaked answers. They break exam rules, can void a result and do not teach the skills the lab tests. Avoid them.
After you pass
Add the certification to your resume and profile, and keep your lab notes. They make a good base for interview answers and a small portfolio of write-ups with sensitive data removed.
The next step depends on your goal. For deeper web testing, look at the EWPTX voucher. For broader defensive and offensive knowledge, browse the Cybersecurity category. Ready to book? Get your EWPT voucher when your practice runs feel steady.
