EV vs Gas: I Ran the Numbers for October 2026. The Break-Even Is Not What You Expect.
Gas hit $4.354 a gallon in the US this week according to EIA. Electricity averages 18.2 cents per kWh. At 27.1 mpg for gas and 3.5 miles per kWh for an EV, the cost per mile works out like this:
Gas: 16.1 cents per mile. EV: 5.2 cents per mile. Saving: 10.9 cents per mile.
At 5,000 miles a year that is $543 in fuel savings. Sounds good. Then insurance enters the picture.
The Insurance Problem Nobody Mentions
Insurify analysed more than 235 million quotes. EVs cost $3,159 a year to insure against $2,218 for gas cars. Comparing only 2024 model year vehicles the gap shrinks to 18%, still $501 a year extra for the EV.
At 5,000 miles a year: $543 fuel saved minus $501 extra insurance equals $157 net saving. That is the real number for a low mileage driver.
The Break-Even Table
Average EV price premium over a comparable gas car is $4,724 in August 2026 per Kelley Blue Book. Here is how long it takes to repay that at different mileage levels:
3,000 miles: never. 5,000 miles: 30 years. 8,000 miles: 8.6 years. 12,000 miles: 4.4 years. 15,000 miles: 3.2 years.
The federal EV purchase credit ended 30 September 2025. Nothing offsets the premium at the federal level right now.
Fast Charging Kills the Saving
Home charging at 18.2 cents per kWh costs 5.2 cents per mile. Electrify America's peak rate averaged $0.617 per kWh in July 2026 according to DCFC Tracker. At 3.5 miles per kWh that is 17.6 cents per mile, more expensive than the gas car at 16.1 cents.
The EV saving only exists when you charge at home or at work. If you depend on fast chargers, the math flips.
UK and Germany Numbers
UK petrol averaged 173.5p per litre in late September 2026. Electricity is 26.32p per kWh under the Ofgem cap. The EV saves about £831 over 8,000 km, roughly 5,000 miles.
Germany: Super E10 averaged €2.145 per litre in August 2026, a monthly record. Electricity is €0.3869 per kWh. The EV saves about €940 over 8,000 km. European petrol prices make the fuel saving work harder than in the US.
Three Questions That Decide It
How close is the EV price to the gas car? Can you charge at home or at work? What do the insurance quotes actually say for both cars?
If all three answers point against the EV, the gas car costs less at 5,000 miles. That is a sound choice at current prices.
