i woke up this morning, checked my news feed, and there it was. chat control passed. not in some committee, not as a proposal — it's actually happening now.

i've been writing about this for months on forums and nobody believed me. "they'll never actually do it," people said. well, they did.

what actually changed

let me break it down without the political speech:

your messages will be scanned. not intercepted by a human sitting somewhere reading your texts. automated systems will check every message, every photo, every file you send through any messaging app operating in the EU. this includes signal, whatsapp, telegram — all of them.

the "detection orders" are real. member states can now issue orders requiring platforms to scan for specific content. the first targets are CSAM (child sexual abuse material), but the language in the regulation leaves the door wide open for expansion. terrorism, drug trafficking, copyright infringement — it's all on the table.

encryption is technically still there, but meaningless. they call it "client-side scanning." your message gets scanned on your phone before it gets encrypted. so the encryption is real, but by the time your data is encrypted, it's already been examined. think of it like a security guard reading your letter before you seal the envelope.

what this means for ordinary people

if you're a developer, a journalist, a lawyer, a doctor, an activist — or honestly just someone who values having a private conversation — this affects you directly.

i've been testing encrypted messaging setups since the proposal first leaked. the tools still work, but the legal framework around them has fundamentally shifted. using strong encryption won't be illegal (yet), but platforms operating in the EU are now required to build scanning into their apps.

what you can do right now

i put together a detailed breakdown of chat control 1.0 — the specific provisions, timelines, and what's actually enforceable vs. what's political theater. you can read it here: EU Chat Control 1.0 — The Full Breakdown

the short version: don't panic, but don't be passive either. understand what's changed, understand your rights, and start thinking about your digital communication strategy.

this isn't about hiding anything. it's about the principle that private conversations should remain private.

more coming soon. i'm going deep on chat control 2.0 next — and trust me, it's worse.
