CVE-2026-76266 questions answered for Splunk administrators
Administrators often want a short briefing before a longer technical read. The questions below summarise CVE-2026-76266 using only the facts in the published advisories.
Vulnerability overview
CVE-2026-76266 affects Splunk Enterprise on Linux. It is a local privilege escalation in the way the distribution package performs upgrades, and it was fixed in Splunk Enterprise 10.4.3, 10.2.7, 10.0.10 and 9.4.15. It is rated 7.7 High and classified as CWE-269.
What does the flaw actually let someone do?
A local user who can run commands as the Splunk service account can modify existing installation content. When an administrator later applies an affected Linux package upgrade, the package maintainer script trusts that content and can run attacker-controlled operating system commands as root.
Who can exploit it?
The attacker needs command execution as the Splunk service account, which the vector records as PR:H. An administrator also has to trigger the package upgrade, recorded as UI:R. Splunk states that the local user should not be able to elevate privileges at will, so the flaw needs the upgrade to happen.
Is it being exploited?
The advisories do not report exploitation in the wild.
Which versions are affected, and what fixes it?
Affected ranges are 10.4.0 to 10.4.2, 10.2.0 to 10.2.6, 10.0.0 to 10.0.9 and 9.4.0 to 9.4.14, described as below 10.4.3, 10.2.7, 10.0.10 and 9.4.15. Upgrading to 10.4.3, 10.2.7, 10.0.10 or 9.4.15 fixes it.
What should we do first?
Upgrade to a fixed release, and if a package upgrade has to happen before that is possible, use a tar file instead of a Linux package. Then review which accounts can run commands as the Splunk service account.
Affected products and scope
The advisory covers Splunk Enterprise on Linux and the flaw is present in several recent release lines at once, which is why the fix appears as four separate version numbers rather than one. The same vendor advisory batch also covers Splunk Secure Gateway issues, but CVE-2026-76266 itself is the local privilege escalation in the Splunk Enterprise package path.
Remediation and mitigations
Patch to 10.4.3, 10.2.7, 10.0.10 or 9.4.15. When patching is not yet possible and an upgrade is required, Splunk's documented workaround is the tar file path. Treat access to the Splunk service account as a privileged capability, because it is the precondition the CVE relies on.
