Credits Are the New Seats: How AI Assistant Pricing Changed in 2026

If you set up tools for small businesses, the pricing page used to be the easy part. One plan, one monthly number, done.
That changed this year. When we researched and evaluated AI assistant tools for our Q4 refresh, the biggest shift was not a new feature. It was how the tools bill.
From seats to credits
Several assistant tools now meter usage instead of (or on top of) charging per seat. Fyxer, an AI email assistant, moved to credit-metered plans in October 2026, and its credits are shared across drafted replies, meeting notes, and chat. Automation platforms have counted tasks for years, and AI steps now draw from the same pool: on Zapier, tasks are shared across Zaps, AI steps, code, and MCP calls, and one MCP tool call uses two tasks.
None of that is bad. It does mean the monthly price on the plan card is a floor, not a forecast.
What actually burns usage
The pattern is similar across tools:
- Volume jobs. Sorting and drafting for a busy inbox, or transcribing every call, uses far more than a weekly report does.
- Chat. Back-and-forth with an assistant usually costs more per turn than a single background action.
- Loops. An automation that runs on every new row or email multiplies whatever each run costs.
The good news: not everything counts. On Zapier, triggers, polling, and built-in steps like Filter, Formatter, and Paths do not use tasks, and failed actions do not count. Designing a workflow so the expensive step only runs when a filter passes is the cheapest optimization there is.
Three checks before you hand it over
- Find the meter. Is it credits, tasks, minutes, or seats? Write down what one unit buys.
- Find the over-limit behavior. Does it pause, bill a higher rate, or block the feature until next month? Zapier, for example, either pauses Zaps or moves you to a higher per-task rate, depending on a setting.
- Watch the first month. Most of these tools show usage in the dashboard. Check it after a week, not after the bill.
The short version
Flat pricing is giving way to usage pricing across AI assistants. Budget for the jobs you will actually run, filter before the expensive step, and look at usage after the first week.
