Closing door prank trend: what it is and how to make your own AI version from one photo

If your TikTok feed has been full of people sprinting down a hallway while a door swings shut, that is the closing door prank (also called the fake closing door prank or door closing prank). It took off at the end of October 2026, and by early November there were AI versions that need only a single photo.
I built a small tool called Turnly that makes these from a photo, so I will say that up front. Below is what the trend is, the three realistic ways to make your own, and the trade-offs of each.
What the trend looks like
The clip has a fixed shape, which is why it is easy to copy:
- Someone stands by an open door at the end of a hallway and counts down: "One, two, three, go!"
- The runner sprints toward the door.
- The door swings shut at the last second.
- The runner squeezes through the gap and drops to their knees, laughing.
Couples posted it on their partners, CapCut tutorials showed how to edit it, and one-photo AI versions followed. Nobody is actually hurt in the AI version: the door swings toward shut and the runner always lands on the near side.
Three ways to make your own
1. Film it for real
You need a hallway, a door you can close safely, a friend to hold it, and a few takes. It is free and it is the real thing. The downside is that a door closing on a sprinting person is how people get hurt, so keep it slow and padded, or skip it.
2. Edit it in CapCut
Several CapCut tutorials show how to fake the effect from your own clips. CapCut is free to start (check its current plans for the export options you need). You still have to shoot the footage and do the timing by hand, so expect an evening, not five minutes.
3. Generate it from a photo
An image-to-video model can invent the hallway, the door and the run. You upload one clear photo of the runner (full body works best), and optionally a second photo of whoever closes the door.
This is what Turnly does. On its closing door prank page the moves and timing are already set, so there is no prompt to write:
- Input: 1 photo of the runner, or 2 photos (runner plus the person at the door). Adults who agreed only, no public figures.
- Output: a 10-second 9:16 MP4 up to 1080p, no watermark, usually ready in a few minutes.
- Price: $4.99 for one 720p video, paid once, no subscription and no sign-up. Credit packs start at $9.99. There is no free tier. Prices checked on 2026-11-06.
Limits worth knowing: the hallway and the door belong to the AI, the runner is small at the far end of the hallway at first so the face shows best once they are through the door, and with one photo the person at the door is made up by the AI. It also does not use the trend's original audio, so switch the sound off and add the trend's sound inside TikTok when you post.
Which one should you pick?
| Way | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Film it | Free | An hour or more | A real prank on a real partner |
| CapCut edit | Free to start | An evening | People who like editing |
| One-photo AI | $4.99 per video (Turnly) | A few minutes | Putting yourself or a friend in it without shooting anything |
Is the trend still going?
Using a TikTok search for "closing door prank ai" and counting different creators whose caption names the trend, I counted 64 creators who posted an AI version in the 7 days to November 5, 2026. Meme trends fade fast, so if you want to join in, do it this week.
If you try any of these, tag the person you would do it to for real. And if you spot something wrong in this write-up, tell me in the comments.
