If your debit card works for a Claude Pro subscription but fails when you buy Claude API credits, you are not alone. Developers across India report the same pattern.
The pattern developers describe
A subscription billed in rupees goes through. A top-up billed in US dollars fails. With a saved card, the page says "Payment failed. Please try again." With a manually entered card, the 3D Secure OTP step passes, and then the payment fails.
On r/developersIndia, one developer described trying at least 40 times over three days. One attempt finally went through, even though the bank had reported it as declined. Another pointed out that Claude Pro is billed in INR while API credits are billed in USD.
What Anthropic has and hasn't localized
Anthropic has started rolling out rupee pricing for Claude subscriptions in India. The API console still bills in US dollars, and per-token rates are published in USD. Anthropic's pricing page lists Claude Sonnet 4.6 at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
Why the RBI rules matter
The Reserve Bank of India's e-mandate framework, effective October 1, 2021, requires additional authentication for recurring card payments. Whether that explains a given decline depends on the bank and the card, and I could not confirm the cause for any individual card.
What to check before you switch providers
- Ask your bank whether international online payments and recurring payments are enabled on the card.
- When a payment is declined, ask the bank for the exact reason.
- Approve the OTP or app prompt quickly.
- Make sure the billing address matches your bank record.
- Stop retrying after a few failures.
A rupee top-up option
If the card still fails, Zenntraa (zenntraa.com) lets you top up an INR balance with UPI, a debit or credit card, or net banking. The minimum top-up is ₹100, with no subscription or monthly fee. The site says the balance never expires, and you can email to request a refund of unused balance.
The request format follows OpenAI's, so you can keep the official OpenAI Python SDK and change two things, the base URL and your key:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://api.zenntraa.com/v1",
api_key="sk-your-key",
)
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="claude-sonnet-4-6",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Summarize this changelog."}],
stream=True,
)
You can see the models and pricing at https://zenntraa.com/.
