Claude 5-hour limit draining fast in T3 Code or the Agent SDK

Your Claude 5-hour limit runs out far sooner than usual when you work in T3 Code, an app built on the Claude Agent SDK, or headless claude -p, even though the same kind of work in the Claude Code terminal app lasts much longer.

T3 Code's maker, Theo, posted: "I confirmed it's a real bug on Anthropic's side." That confirmation comes from Theo's own testing, not from Anthropic. As of 31 Oct 2026, Anthropic hasn't confirmed it or announced a fix. On 28 Oct, Boris Cherny of Anthropic posted on X a general review of Claude Code usage complaints: no single root cause or regression, a few smaller token-burn issues being fixed, and most fast drains traced to one or two heavy sessions, such as xhigh effort, /goal, Workflows, Agent Teams or long SDK jobs. It doesn't mention this report or the headless-versus-interactive gap, so we can't read it as an answer to it.

What you can do while the reports are open:

1. Check your real usage. Run /usage in Claude Code before you change anything.
2. Move heavy work to the interactive app. It's the path users measured as cheaper on the 5-hour window. This is a workaround based on user tests, not an official recommendation. On Max, Ultra and Team, Anthropic's monthly API credits, once you've claimed them, cover Agent SDK and claude -p runs that use an API key from your linked Console organization (see Anthropic's help article for amounts and limits); some commenters on #97074 report an environment-variable workaround, others warn it may breach Anthropic's terms, and we don't recommend it.
3. Don't confuse it with a separate report. anthropics/claude-code#104738 is a different symptom: two surfaces disagreeing about the limit.
4. Know your account type. On 30 Oct, Anthropic said on X it is removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts. This report is about the plans and accounts that still have a 5-hour limit.
5. Add your data to the issue. Post your plan, model, Claude Code version and before-and-after 5-hour percentages on anthropics/claude-code#97074.
