Building a Metaphysical Theory Reduction Engine: Applying Logic & Code to Consciousness

Have you ever tried to map out every major theory of consciousness—from Reductive Physicalism to Analytic Idealism—and test their logical consistency?

In the study of metaphysics and philosophy of mind, one recurring pattern emerges: most positive assertions about the fundamental nature of reality eventually run into logical contradictions or antinomies when pressed to their absolute limits.

Inspired by the research of Peter Guy Jones (author of In Pursuit of the Inconceivable: An Investigation of Metaphysics and Mysticism, Essentia Books) and the taxonomies established by Robert Lawrence Kuhn (Closer to Truth), we built the Metaphysical Theory Reduction Engine (MTRE).

💡 What is the Metaphysical Theory Reduction Engine?

The Metaphysical Theory Reduction Engine is an interactive, web-based tool designed to analyze, categorize, and dialectically reduce various theories of consciousness and metaphysics.

Rather than treating philosophical theories as mere subjective opinions, the engine evaluates them using formal logical frameworks—such as Nāgārjuna’s Catuṣkoṭi (four-fold negation), Kantian Antinomies, and modern analytical metaphysics.

🛠️ How It Works Under the Hood

The engine operates on three main pillars:

1. Taxonomic Classification

Using Kuhn's universal 10-category landscape of consciousness, every submitted theory is mapped to its core ontological commitments:

  • Materialism & Physicalism (Reductive, Non-reductive, Quantum)
  • Panpsychism & Idealism (Constitutive, Analytic, Cosmic)
  • Dualism & Monism (Substance, Property, Neutral)

2. Reductio ad Absurdum Engine

Each class of theory is subjected to a set of predefined logical tests:

  • Does it create a hard problem / explanatory gap?
  • Does it lead to infinite regress or circularity?
  • Does it violate the Law of Non-Contradiction when generalized to the universe as a whole?

3. Nondual Synthesis

When selective assertions cancel each other out through logical elimination, the engine converges on an apophatic / nondual framework ($Advaita$)—the perspective that fundamental reality cannot be reduced to a single one-sided finite concept.
