Britain creates COBRA team to detect forest fires faster

The UK is deploying an AI-integrated wildfire management system as part of a new COBRA task force.

The project leverages the NASA/IBM Prithvi foundation model and satellite data for heat and vegetation moisture analysis.

For aerial operations, the RAF will utilize specialized firefighting equipment on Chinook and A400M aircraft.

This initiative coordinates technical input from Airbus, Google, and Vodafone to optimize fire detection, trajectory prediction, and emergency response in hard-to-reach locations.

The announcement comes after a summer of extreme heat that caused widespread damage in Britain. Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to present the plans at a summit at the National Situation Centre.

How will fires be detected?

Airbus satellites can already measure how dry forests are and detect heat signatures from space. The Prithvi artificial intelligence model, developed by NASA and IBM, can detect fires and predict how they will develop.

Companies such as Google, Airbus and Vodafone are expected to participate in the plans.

Helicopters and aircraft for hard-to-reach areas

The Royal Air Force (RAF) will equip Chinook helicopters and A400M aircraft with specialist firefighting equipment. The equipment will be used to tackle fires in areas where access is difficult.
