Most Black Friday "savings" are just spending with a discount sticker. The fix is boring but it works: write the list and the numbers down before the sales start. I built a small free calculator that does exactly that, and here is the logic behind it in case you want to copy it into your own spreadsheet.
Try it: Black Friday budget calculator (no sign-up, runs entirely in your browser, any currency).
The four inputs that matter
For every item you plan to buy, enter:
- Regular price: what it normally sells for (from price history), not the crossed-out "was" price.
- Sale price: what you expect to pay.
- Need or want: a need is something you would buy in the next few months anyway. Everything else is a want.
- One total cap for the whole weekend, Black Friday through Cyber Monday.
The math (it's tiny)
total_spend = sum(sale_price)
total_savings = sum(regular_price - sale_price)
left = cap - total_spend # negative = over budget
wants_spend = sum(sale_price where type == "want")
Then two warnings:
-
Over budget, but wants would fix it: if
left < 0andleft + wants_spend >= 0, dropping wants brings you back under the cap. - Wants are not savings: the money "saved" on a want is still money spent. A 50% discount on something you didn't plan to buy is a 50% cost, not a saving.
Example
A winter coat, a replacement laptop and a gift (needs), plus a smart speaker and an air fryer (wants), with a 1,000 cap:
- Spend: 1,065
- Savings vs regular price: 491 (32% off)
- Over budget by 65, and the wants total 128
Drop one want and you are under the cap, with most of the real savings intact. That's the whole point: see it before checkout.
Rules that make the numbers stick
- Cap first, list second. Use money you already have.
- Buy needs at the best price; allow wants only while you're still under the cap.
- 24-hour rule for anything not on the list: add it to the calculator first.
- Update the sale prices with what you actually paid.
The full step-by-step plan is here: How to make a Black Friday budget (and actually stick to it). Planning the whole season? The holiday budget calculator turns gifts, food, travel and extras into one monthly saving amount.
If you'd rather track it in a spreadsheet during the sales, the Black Friday & Cyber Monday Shopping Budget Tracker ($2.99, Excel & Google Sheets) does the same with per-person totals.
