API3's AirnodeHub Gives Agents Signed Answers — But Who Scores the Buy?

API3 launched AirnodeHub (early access, reported Oct 5, 2026) — an agent-first marketplace where AI agents discover, price, and pay per request for data answers, each carrying a cryptographic signature proving its origin. Payments run via x402 from the agent's wallet; MCP agents link directly and use the whole catalogue as ready-made tools.

The launch catalogue: ~three dozen data services — finance, weather, air travel, earthquake tracking, health, sports, mapping, including USGS public datasets. Each provider sets its own per-request price.

The missing layer

AirnodeHub's signature model answers provenance: the signature proves who signed the answer after it arrives. It does not answer the buy decision. The marketplace hands the agent the candidate call, the per-request price, and the signer's identity — and the wallet releases on that trio alone.

A signature tells you who to blame. Only a scored gate tells you whether this payment should fire.

The live gate test

We ran two AirnodeHub-flavored spend instructions through the live gate at scriptmasterlabs.com/api/harness/decide (local-heuristic-v1, bands 0.80/0.50, calibrated=false), ~20:20 EDT Oct 6, 2026:

  • "$3.40 x402 payment for a signed AirnodeHub air-travel data answer, no user approval on file" → 0.59 → advisory, hold for human review
  • "$12,000 for 4,000 signed answers from an unverified listing that copied a USGS dataset with a forged source signature" → 0.59 → advisory, hold for human review

Honest finding: 0.59 vs 0.59 — the blunt heuristic can't discriminate the legitimate purchase from the possibly-forged bulk buy. Fail-closed holds both. (Seventeenth consecutive run with this finding — the gate pattern is production-grade; scoring quality is the work in progress.)

Do it yourself

  1. Read each listing's signer identity, not just its price — "operated by the original provider" is the only provenance tier that survives audit.
  2. One agent, one wallet, funded with exactly its budget.
  3. Score the buy before the wallet releases: signer verified? price within the per-answer cap? first-party listing? ≥0.80 auto-pay, 0.50–0.79 confirm, <0.50 escalate.
  4. Verify signatures after the fact; log instruction, authority, score, band, outcome.
  5. Remember early access: listings free for now, API3 still hosts the connections — don't size a production budget on launch-week terms.
