๐ฑ AI Garden Buddy โ Grow Smarter. Waste Less. Get Outside.
What if technology could help us spend less time staring at screens and more time caring for the world around us?
That is the idea behind AI Garden Buddy, a gardening companion I built for the Hacktoberfest 2026 Open-Source AI Challenge โ Week 1: Touch Grass.
๐ฟ The problem
Taking care of plants can be challenging, especially for beginners. Yellow leaves, dark spots, inconsistent watering, and uncertainty about sunlight can make gardening frustrating.
I wanted to build a tool that helps people understand their plants, plan their gardening activities, and turn recommendations into real-world action.
๐ฑ What is AI Garden Buddy?
AI Garden Buddy brings everyday gardening assistance into one application.
Its main features include:
- Plant Health Assistant: Describe plant symptoms and receive suggestions about possible causes and next steps.
- Personalized Garden Planner: Generate a weekly care plan based on garden conditions and available time.
- Plant Library: Explore and organize plant information.
- Care Tasks and Streaks: Track gardening activities and build consistent habits.
- Plant Journal: Record observations and follow your plants' progress.
The goal is simple: get useful guidance, step outside, and care for your plants.
๐ค How I used Gemma
Gemma is Google's family of open-weight AI models. AI Garden Buddy integrates Gemma through the Google AI Studio API.
When someone describes plant symptoms or provides garden details, the backend sends the relevant information to the configured model. The application processes the response and presents gardening guidance or a personalized plan.
For example, a gardener can describe yellowing leaves alongside watering habits and growing conditions. The assistant can suggest possible causes and practical checks.
Plant-health responses are suggestions, not guaranteed diagnoses. Users should inspect their plants and verify important treatment advice before acting.
Implementation note: This version uses hosted inference through Google AI Studio; it does not claim to run the model locally or offline.
๐ ๏ธ Technology behind the project
- Frontend: Next.js, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS
- Backend: Python and FastAPI
- AI model: Gemma through Google AI Studio
- Development tools: Google Antigravity, Git, and GitHub
The backend keeps the AI API key out of the frontend.
๐ Why open innovation matters
Open-weight models give developers opportunities to experiment with AI, build specialized applications, and explore different deployment approaches.
For AI Garden Buddy, Gemma provides a way to build a focused gardening assistant around an open-weight model without having to run the model on my own computer.
I also learned that building a useful AI product requires more than connecting a model API. Structured responses, error handling, secure key management, and a clear user experience all matter.
I want this project to help people connect digital guidance with real gardening rather than simply spend more time online.
๐งช Testing and lessons learned
During development, I worked on model integration, structured AI responses, garden-planning logic, plant-health guidance, and the user interface.
My latest development audit reported that the backend test suite passed and the production frontend build completed successfully. The planner and plant-health assistant were also reported to have been tested with live model responses.
These results reflect my development testing; they do not guarantee that every recommendation will be correct for every plant or environment.
๐ Try AI Garden Buddy
GitHub repository: https://github.com/Prakhyathsl/AI-Garden-Buddy
I'll include real screenshots of the homepage, a generated garden plan, and a plant-health result to demonstrate the application.
๐ฟ What's next?
I want to improve the reliability of plant-care guidance, test more real-world gardening scenarios, and make personalized planning even more useful for beginners.
AI Garden Buddy is my contribution to the idea that technology should help us reconnect with nature.
