A lot of people still picture "AI in the supermarket" as a chatbot answering questions. A Portuguese-language video from the Bluesoft ERP channel makes a useful distinction that also applies well beyond retail:

  • A traditional system follows programmed rules.
  • Generative AI writes text, interprets information and answers prompts.
  • An AI agent receives a goal and decides which steps to take to reach it, using the data and systems it has access to.

Where agents can help in a store

  • Inventory: analyze sales history, seasonality and expected demand to flag stock-out risk and prepare a purchase suggestion.
  • Perishables: track turnover and expiry dates to recommend discounts before products become losses.
  • Management: cross sales, stock and margin data to investigate why a category is underperforming and point to likely causes.

The catch

Using AI for forecasting is not the same as having an autonomous agent run the whole process. Results depend on data quality, system integration and clear limits on what the agent may do on its own, with human approval for the important steps.

I wrote a longer summary (in Portuguese), with the key points and the full video, on IA Dots: AI agents for supermarkets.
