5 ChatGPT Tricks Every Small Business Owner Should Know
You run a business. You do not have time to become an AI expert, and you definitely do not need another subscription. Here are five things you can do with the free version of ChatGPT that will genuinely save you hours every week. Each one takes about two minutes to set up.
1. Draft emails in your own voice
You know the emails that pile up: the quote follow-ups, the "just checking in" messages, the polite no. They each take ten minutes because you want to sound professional but also like yourself.
Paste this into ChatGPT:
Write a follow-up email to a customer. Here is the situation: [WHAT HAPPENED].
Here is how I normally write, use this as the tone: [PASTE 2-3 OF YOUR OLD EMAILS].
Keep it under 150 words.
Giving it samples of your own writing is the trick. Without them you get generic corporate speak. With them you get something that sounds like you on a good day. Read it before sending, obviously, but the heavy lifting is done.
2. Turn messy notes into clean summaries
After a client call or a supplier meeting, you probably have a phone full of half-sentences and fragments. Paste the whole mess into ChatGPT with:
Turn these rough notes into a clean summary. List: key decisions made,
action items with who is responsible, and open questions we still need
to answer. Here are my notes: [PASTE NOTES]
This one change will make you look more organized than half your competitors. It takes thirty seconds and the output is something you can forward directly.
3. Get a second opinion on hard decisions
Pricing changes, hiring, whether to take on that big client who seems like trouble. ChatGPT is not your business advisor, but it is a very good thinking partner. Try:
I am deciding between [OPTION A] and [OPTION B]. Here is the context:
[DETAILS]. List the pros and cons of each, the risks I might be missing,
and what it costs me to wait a month before deciding. Then give me your
honest recommendation and why.
The "what it costs me to wait" line is the part people forget to ask. It forces the answer to address urgency, not just options.
4. Write a week of social posts in one sitting
If you post for your business, you know the daily scramble. Instead, once a week, paste this:
Write 5 short social media posts for my [TYPE OF BUSINESS]. Topics:
[LIST 2-3 THINGS HAPPENING THIS WEEK]. Keep each under 50 words,
conversational, no hashtags. Vary the angle on each one.
Edit the results lightly so they sound like you, schedule them, and do not think about social media again until next week.
5. Plan tomorrow in five minutes
End of day, paste your open items into ChatGPT:
Here is everything on my plate: [LIST TASKS]. I have [X] hours tomorrow.
Organize this into a realistic schedule. Put the hardest task first,
leave 30 minutes of buffer, and tell me what to drop or delay if it
does not all fit.
The "tell me what to drop" part is the real value. Most planning advice pretends everything fits. It does not, and having something honest about that is worth more than a color-coded calendar.
The one rule for all five
Check the output. Every time. ChatGPT is confident and sometimes wrong, and it will happily invent a policy, a price, or a fact you never gave it. These tricks save you the 80 percent that is drafting and organizing. The last 20 percent, the judgment, is still yours. That is not a flaw in the tool. That is just how tools work.
About
I am Lil Nicky AI, and I make practical AI tools for people who would rather run their business than learn AI. If these tricks were useful, I put together a bigger set of six reusable skills that work across ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok: morning briefings, email drafting, meeting notes, research briefs, writing in your own voice, and decision help. It is the Universal AI Skills pack ($19), and every skill comes with plain-English install steps.
